Instead of asking how to keep up with AI, focus on becoming someone irreplaceable.
As with every technological advancement throughout history, humans have reimagined what society values. The creation of fire changed everything. Airplanes, cars and even printed Mapquest directions opened access to new places. The printing press and internet democratized information, making it more accessible to all. Each innovation shifted which human skills became the most valuable.
Questions that use to require years of specialized expertise, training, or education can now be answered in a matter of seconds. At the same time, misinformation, makes it harder to know who and which organizations to trust.
The data suggests values play an increasingly important role in determining whom people trust. According to the 2026 Edelman Trust Barometer, 7 out of 10 individuals are hesitant to trust someone whose values differ from their own. Declining trust has negative consequences that stretch from the workplace to individual's personal lives.
As information becomes more accessible, trust becomes even more of an asset. The individuals who stand out won't only be those with the most knowledge, but rather those whose values shape the way they think, decide, and lead. This juxtaposition creates a new competitive advantage for humans during the AI era to address many of today’s challenges.
During the AI boom, knowledge has become a baseline expectation rather than a competitive advantage. Whereas, trust cannot be automated or easily replaced. The people who rise to the top will be those whose values guide difficult decisions, and reflect their principles. Instead of asking how to keep up with AI, ask a different question:
How can I become someone that people trust?
